Crazy that I haven’t posted a video in so long!
Had to take down the studio a while to save on energy/heating, and never got it uncluttered enough to record videos once I got it up and running again.
Anyway, trying something a bit different here on this channel for a bunch of reasons:
* Got my Revox A77 reel-to-reel repaired recently and absolutely fell in love with the tape medium. Not just the sound, but the whole tactile experience and also because how awesome the technology is. I mean, it’s soundwaves converted to magnetic fields encoded in particles of iron oxide (aka rust. Rust! How cools is that?!) on a thin strip of plastic film. So now I want to do everything with it!
* Speaking of tactile, this also got me into cassettes – got a couple of tape decks and started building a little collection of some mostly 80s and 90s music that shaped me as a musician over the years, and I really want to do something on that medium too.
* Canceled my Spotify subscription after they sponsored the orange turd’s inauguration, and subsequently almost stopped listening to music for an entire year. How depressing is that?! This completely changed though once I started getting some physical media. Been listening to my small but growing collection of tapes and vinyls like crazy since I started. Getting out a cassette or vinyl from the sleeve and putting it in the player becomes a little event that sparks JOY, as opposed to the opening up the soulless and exploitative streaming services knowing what they’re doing to the underground/independent music industry.
* Actually paying for music again also feels surprisingly good. I’d rather get back to also buying digital releases and supporting the artists than paying the streaming platforms where my money gets stolen by the major labels who own them regardless of what I listen to (user centric royalties now!)
* Finally, I DJ’ed at a small private event this summer and realized how much I miss doing that occasionally. So here’s me recording a mixtape for myself to listen to with my living room cassette deck, and on the Revox just because (and to keep a master recording if I need to make another copy ofc). There’s some damn fine music in there, so figured I should share the love as well.
